Improved energy efficiency of Australian Panels' Facilities

Overview

Location: Oberon, NSW
Industry: Manufacturing

As part of Australian Panels' commitment to being eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable, Crossmuller’s Electrical Division commenced work on installing a 4 Megawatt Gas Turbine Generator at the Oberon facility.

Before the installation could begin, a high-pressure gas pipeline and Gas Conditioning Station was installed. This station ensures the Turbine can access approximately 2000kPa supply of gas to run at maximum efficiency. The gas supply pipeline and pressure reduction station was completed within two years.

How does it work?

There are three main sections in a Gas Turbine Generator: the Compressor, the Combustion System, and the Turbine.

The Compressor pressurizes air in the engine before feeding it to the combustor at incredibly high speeds.

The Combustion System injects a steady stream of gas into the combustors where it mixes with the high-pressure air and is burnt at temperatures over 1000°C.

The Turbine has a complex array of aero foil blades which are rotated by the high-pressure gas stream expanding as it goes through the Turbine. Rotation of the blades both drive the compressor and spin a generator to produce electricity.

The Solution

The Gas Turbine Generator will be connected to the site's high voltage network and will produce a maximum of 4 Megawatts at 11,000V. This amount of energy will support 20% of the site's power consumption. Combined with the existing Solar Panels, 40% of the site will be powered by
sustainable energy.

Utilising the by-product of any process is an important part of sustainability. The 4 Megawatt Gas Turbine Generator produces around 10 Megawatts of exhaust at 515°C, which will supplement the drying process on the Particleboard Drying System.

Over the years, Crossmuller has readily been commissioned by Australian Panels to improve the energy efficiency of their facilities. In the years to come, Australian Panels aims to have 50% of their Oberon site powered by sustainable energy.
